Bwlch-Y-Groes is a one bedroom holiday cottage with mountain views high above the village of Llanuwchllyn just south of the market town of Bala in North Wales. A cottage as beautiful on the inside as the landscape outside.

Lovingly renovated from a disused barn by farm owners Karen and John, this working grade ii listed farm cottage offers an idyllic retreat for guests wanting to explore the Snowdonia National Park. I’m sure John worked hard to restore the fabric of the building but it’s Karen’s attention to detail and choice of furnishings that most guests will notice. Small touches like the reflective vase in the window or the lazy cushions on the sofa help create that fairy tale retreat that a lot of our guests crave.

The natural focal point of the lounge is the gorgeous enamelled log burner. A very welcome sight after a long walk in the mountains. At the other end of the room a traditional welsh dresser is flanked by luxuriously deep sofa and arm chair.

A small but attractive kitchen has been imaginatively organised and well equipped. Distinctive touches like hessian storage sacks and cheque curtains are intermixed with more modern kitchen appliances. A pretty dark oak dinning table and chairs sits in the light of the french doors to the rear of the property.

Upstairs things get even nicer. A double sized bed sits under the original oak truss of the old barn. Guest wake to a view of the Arran mountain range on the far side of a beautiful green valley. And don’t worry if you’re not looking your best at that time, there’s no one looking back except the odd nonchalant sheep and perhaps a curious chicken or two. Some beanbag chairs and tasteful decretive pieces create a sense of calm and tranquility to match.

The cottage is set in Cynllwyd Uchaf a small hamlet about half way between lake Vyrnwy (as seen on BBC spring watch) and Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), on the Bwlch y Groes a famous mountain pass which links the villages of Llanuwchllyn and Dinas Mawddwy. Beautiful in all weathers and seasons, the valley is steeped in folk lore, stories of giants, fairies and bandits. Footpaths criss cross the valley, there’s one leading down to Llanuwchllyn village which is about a mile and a half away. Here you can take a ride on the narrow-gauge railway which runs along the east shore of the lake from Llanuwchllyn to Bala, or visit the famous Eagles Pub for one of their farm grown, home cooked, meals.

Or you might want to travel in the opposite direction to lake Vyrnwy . A truly magical place with RSPB reserve, bicycle hire and country hotel and spa serving afternoon teas, relaxing beauty treatments and country pursuits such as clay pigeon shooting, and fly fishing – all of which are open to non residents.

Bala itself is a 10 minute drive away and is a charming example of a welsh market town. There are two sailing clubs on the lake and hire facilities for canoeing and kayaking. There’s also a leisure centre with a swimming pool, a golf club which offers summer membership, and white water rafting at the national centre. So whether you’re a hardened hill walker or casual ambler, you want to fish for trout or tiddlers, watch red kites or robins, go thrill seeking, or take a scenic drive, visit the seaside (Barmouth is about 45 minutes away) or the moors or mountains or simply escape from it all for a while, light the fire and truly relax in beautiful tranquil surroundings Bwlch-Y-Groes cottage is for you.
